Fish Waste Creates Biofuel
Friday, May 09, 2008
NBC 6 -- MIAMI -- It's feeding time and the fish at the Neptune Industries fish farm are hungry. The hybrid stripe bass are being raised in Florida City for all of us to eat.

But, there's more.

"Every time you feed a pound of feed to fish, they're going to produce a pound of waste," explained Sal Cherch, Neptune's Chief Operating Officer. "That pound of waste now comes out of that tank, it's captured, it's treated and that waste becomes fertilizer for biodiesel algae."

That's right, here they're putting fish waste to good use. In this case, a pilot project to create algae that can one day fuel your car. The algae's growing in so-called "floating socks" in a one-time rock quarry.

There has been experimentation/talk of this for years and years. It is always just talk, however.

Maybe with the price of oil over $100/bbl algae-produced fuel will be sufficiently efficient to make production worthwhile but I doubt it.

Always talk, always 'fuel of the future' and nothing ever comes of it unless the government subsidizes big agribusiness.

Weird, but if it works, God bless 'em. We need all the alternative energy sources we can come up with. Someday, someone is going to hit the jackpot and discover a revolutionary cheap and plentiful energy source. Then, OPEC can keep their oil and suffer greatly from their excessive greed.

biofuel can be made from a lot of things. but the auto industry needs to start making more diesel engines first to make use of it.

You've got to read this short, informative article:
http://www.worldchanging.com/archives/007497.html
There is LOTS of fish oil waste around the world that is already being utilized though much of it is thrown out. A true "waste" of waste.
It is a perfectly viable fuel alternative. Check it out!

this is better at least this will not cause the price of food to go up or try to find more and more oil where there is less and less

NPR did a great story this morning on Conn. burning landfill waste to produce electricity and
still they cannot keep up. They still ship tons of waste to Ohio, KY and Penn. to fill their landfills.
They even have a garbage museum that sounds pretty cool!

Question: If you produce a pound of waste for each pound of food, why feed the fish? Why not just turn the food in biofuel? How can the fish grow? Is it magic?

Some of these editors need to do more than proof read for typos before they publish an article.

Do they have access to enough fish to supply all the fuel to American cars? Looks to me like a single spec of sand in the whole Miami beach.
